11th Annual SSF Corn Boil July 23

It has become an annual rite of summer in Sterling – the Sterling Schools Foundation Corn Boil.  The 11th annual event will take place Thursday, July 23 from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Sterling High School Commons and Cul-de-sac.  It is presented by CGH Medical Center, Arthur’s Garden Deli and SBM.

“We set another record for meals sold last year with 1250, and we are looking to surpass that this year,” said Ralph Gonzalez, SSF Corn Boil chairman, who adds the goal for this year is 1300 meals.

“The biggest draw for our event is the great sweet corn supplied by Selmi’s,” said Gonzalez.  “People love it, and we will continue to give the people what they love.”

Proceeds from the Corn Boil will benefit three important SSF programs:

  • The Sterling Schools A+ Initiative – a program created to help Sterling Schools continue to offer important fine arts and athletic programs to our students despite recent budget shortfalls
  • Bucks for Books – a program that assists Sterling Schools with funding for new textbook and library book purchases
  • Mini-Grants – a program that funds teacher requests for special teaching tools and/or curriculum tools to help enhance student performance in the classroom.

In addition to the delicious Selmi’s bi-color sweet corn, the menu consists of a pulled pork sandwich or all beef hot dog from Wyanet Meets in Sterling, chips, dessert from Folsom’s Bakery in Rock Falls and a drink.  Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for students who dine in.

Volunteers will be delivering lunches to businesses in Sterling and Rock Falls from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  To arrange for a lunch delivery, call the Foundation at 815-626-0022 or email foundation@sterlingschools.org.
